This little tale will have you ‘bowled over’. Yet another success story thanks to our Supported Internship programme.
To tell us more – here’s R2W Employment Advisor in Furness, Claire Round approaching the crease: “This is Joe – he started the internship programme in September. He has many qualifications within media and sports coaching. Originally he wanted to be involved with football coaching. He took part in the FIT4WORK programme with us and he demonstrated really good leadership and coaching skills. After many attempts with local football associations and clubs in Furness we contacted Bob Simpson from Cumbria Cricket Ltd, feeling we could at least fulfil Joe’s careers goals in ‘coaching’.
Bob came in and met Joe in October and asked him to assist with a cricket coaching session so he could observe him. Bob was very keen, as we were, to ensure this was something Joe would want to do. (Bob says “Joe agreed and he coached us!!! It was great fun and Joe gave clear instructions, changed the rules and encouraged us.”)
After this session Bob had a chat with Joe and read his CV which collated all of his skills and qualifications. He saw a fantastic opportunity.
Bob offered a placement which would also include using Joe’s media and art skills.
He now has a placement which involves Joe;
- Updating media/websites
- Including Joe’s art work in competitions to publicise Cumbria Cricket Ltd
- Assisting head coach with meetings with local schools to sign them up for coaching sessions
- Assisting with coaching sessions to EYFS,KS1 and KS2 children
- Assisting with clubs
- Creating advertisements/leaflets
- Creating videos including interviews of children/staff who have taken part to add to the website.
Joe can see the opportunities and with the support of his Job coach is settling into his role well.”
